The young heroes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians stand up to the likes of artificial intelligence in the newest episode of ScreenRant's Debunking AI. The show's original trio, made up of Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri are back for another round of gods and monsters in season 2, although this time their characters do not all converge at Camp Half-Blood.
Percy (Scobell) has befriended a Cyclops named Tyson, who turns out to be his half-brother, which creates some tension between himself and his friend Annabeth (Jeffries). But the two will have to put that aside to rescue their satyr friend Grover (Simhadri), who has been kidnapped by a very different Cyclops. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 is based on the second book in Rick Riordan's novel series, The Sea of Monsters, but even that blueprint doesn't mean even longtime fans can predict all the nuances of the story.
The stars of Percy Jackson sat down with ScreenRant host Liam Crowley to debunk AI, starting with their childhood hobbies and leading to their allegedly impromptu costume changes. Along the way, the trio also revealed who their favorite Greek gods were and why (or why not).
Whether Avid Readers Or Not, The Cast Of Percy Jackson All Love Their Franchise
AI got very poetic when explaining was Walker, Leah, and Aryan had in common, suggesting that all three were avid bookworms as children, and fulfilled their dreams of stepping into their favorite fictional worlds by landing roles in Percy Jackson. Scobell was quick to dispell the first half of this assumption, revealing that, "I'm not a very good reader." While he wasn't into fiction reading in general, "I read Percy Jackson, but that's kind of it for me."
Simhadri pointed out that he did "read a lot when [he] was younger," but Jeffries clarified that, "back when I was reading the Percy Jackson books, I still understood that and knew, but I wasn't probably as stuck onto it." All three of them are fans now, but their love of the Olympians hasn't necessarily spread to other novels.
One way Scobell shows his affection for the series is by keeping the various versions of Riptide from set, since the sword grows with him. "The season 2 one is an inch or two bigger than the season 1 [version]," the actor explained. "And then in season 3, the one I'm working with right now is even bigger than that."
He needs a Riptide that suits him, naturally, in order to properly fight against Luke's Backbiter. Scobell enthusiastically described what those action scenes are like, adding, "I have so much stress on those days just because it's so heavy!"
The biggest thing about doing stunts for me is not anticipating what's coming next, but with Charlie, Backbiter is so heavy that when he swings it, it almost drags behind. It's really slow for a second, then all of a sudden, it comes by really fast. I have to make it look like I'm not anticipating, but also not hurt myself at the same time.
All About Greek Gods & Greek Costumes
Annabeth and Athena in Percy Jackson season 2
Though it had a good grasp on the basics of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, including the importance of Tyson's arrival to the storyline, AI had no choice but to hallucinate behind-the-scenes antics when asked for a funny on set moment. The trio confidently denied there ever being an instance of swapping each other's props and costumes between takes, creating a scene full of improvised confusion and laughter — as great as that would have been.
"I think our costumers would put us down if we ever did that to each other," Simhadri exclaimed. "A full scene of improvised confusion before the director could stop us? Like, we sprinted past him on the set, sound speed rolling before he could do anything?" Scobell echoed his costar's queries, wondering, "Did we change on set, which is weird? Or did we decide to change off set, which is even weirder in some ways?"
Jeffries threw a challenge AI's way: "Show behind the scenes of it!" The actor declared that she's like to "see what they try to find from that, because it's not us!"
Trolling commenced in full force when it came to the cast's favorite Greek gods. Scobell's were declared to be Achilles and Icarus because he loves the tragic, cool guy energy of heroes. "Who is writing this?" The star demanded. "Why am I catching strays all of a sudden?" He did admit that they were some of his favorite mytholofical characters, "But they're also not Gods, and that's not why. It's a little bit of why, but it's not totally why."
It correctly assessed that Jeffries' favorite was Athena, athough the addition of Zeus caused some debate. The actress was adamant that she did not like having control over everything, but her costars begged to differ. "That's you," Scobell teased, while Simhadri added, "I'm willing to be cold, hard, American cash that you've said that in an interview before. I think we should pull up the clip!"
Simhadri had his turn in the spotlight, though, when AI claimed Hermes was his favorite God because he loves that Hermes can fly. "That makes me sound like an 8-year-old," he joked. "'I like Hermes because he can fly!'" He further clarified that while he does like Hermes a lot, his favorite might be Hephaestus.
I always thought I would be a son of Hephaestus. My dad is an engineer. But I also like Apollo. I'm more than just a flying fan, guys!
Jeffries summed up the answers succintly: "It makes Walker sound cocky, me sound rude, and then Aryan just sounds like Tyson."
As for the final grade? Scobell was harsh but fair in his evaluation, giving it a D "because there were some things in there that are true," but not nearly enough. The bottom line was that, "I just don't trust it. Have you watched Terminator? It's like Skynet. It's similar. We're getting there. They're learning about us." Simhadri jokingly calmed his fears by responding, "Not fast or well, but it's happening."
