By Michael GallagherShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberJust a few years ago, Russell Wilson and Sean Payton were tasked with turning around the Denver Broncos.
That relationship turned sour pretty quickly, and the two sided parted ways following the 2023 season after just 11 wins in 30 starts over two seasons.
Wilson signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants last offseason, but he was benched just a few games into his tenure in favor of rookie QB Jaxson Dart — a move that prompted Payton to take a shot at Wilson through reporters.

Payton’s jab didn’t sit right with Wilson, who took to social media to put his former coach on blast.
“Classless… but not surprised…. Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media. 😎😂 #LetsRide 🤣,” Wilson tweeted back on Oct. 21.
During a recent appearance on the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast, Wilson was asked about the infamous tweet and why he chose to publicly throw Payton under the bus, to which Wilson didn’t hesitate to throw more shade Payton’s way for being disrespectful.

“I don’t say much. I don’t hardly ever say anything,” Wilson said. “I think there’s a time and place, but sometimes you get fatigued of people talking about you. We’re all human. It’s one thing for people who aren’t in the field, or people say bots are or whatever, talking — I don’t worry about that stuff. But to me, when you’ve been on the same side of this and that, and I’ve got the same amount of rings that you’ve got, meaning Sean.
“Listen, I got a lot of respect for him as a play-caller, but to take a shot, I don’t like that. I don’t think it’s necessary. Especially when I’m not even on your team anymore. So for me, I’ve realized I stayed quiet for so long, there’s a time and place when I’m not. … It’s not a matter of disrespect, just don’t disrespect me.”
The Broncos have gone 24-10 over the last two seasons after Wilson’s departure. The team drafted Bo Nix 12th overall in 2024, and he’s thrown for 7,706 yards, 54 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions during that stretch.
