Since the beginning of anime's global boom in popularity during the 2020s, HBO Max has been among the busiest streaming services doing everything in its power to expand their selection of anime films. On December 1st, that selection will grow wider, with 10 new titles from distributor GKIDS becoming available to all HBO Max subscribers.

Already being home to nearly the entire Studio Ghibli catalog of movies, as well as a few of Makoto Shinkai's highly acclaimed works, HBO Max is the preferred streaming service of countless anime fans. The service's upcoming December additions will include a variety of popular films, a few of which are widely considered masterpieces.

After adding a number of noteworthy anime movies to its selection in September, including one of the most popular Japanese films of the last decade, Your Name, HBO Max is once again bolstering its lineup with another round of exciting titles from North American distributor GKIDS.

Additions include Liz and the Blue Bird, Lu Over the Wall, Mind Game, The Colors Within, as well as three films from renowned director Mamoru Hosoda, Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Wolf Children. The most exciting new titles, however, are Millennium Actress, and the 4K streaming debut of Perfect Blue.

The two films by the legendary Satoshi Kon are among the most celebrated in anime history, the latter of which was unavailable to stream on any major platform in recent years. Following its limited run in theaters, the 2025 4K restoration of Perfect Blue will be available, and fans will not want to miss their chance at experiencing it.

HBO Max Will Continue to Bolster Its Anime Lineup in 2026

While the December additions to HBO Max's lineup are undeniably exciting, the service isn't stopping there. Later in 2026, other notable titles are set to become available to all subscribers, including another Mamoru Hosoda-directed film, The Boy and the Beast, as well as the cult classic Angel's Egg, which also recently enjoyed a limited theatrical run.

With anime's ongoing rise in popularity, the world's top streaming services have been battling it out for the industry's biggest titles, and HBO Max is ensuring it will not be left behind. Anime fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming months, and will need to clear their schedules in order to catch what's coming to HBO Max.
