By Anna CommanderShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberPresident Donald Trump's approval rating among Hispanics has taken a dip this week, a new poll from The Economist and YouGov shows.
Newsweek reached out to political analysts via email for comment Tuesday evening.
Why It Matters
The decline is noteworthy because Hispanic voters played a pivotal role in Trump’s 2024 reelection coalition and shifts in their support could pose major implications for future elections. Economic pressures and immigration enforcement could be driving a change, signaling possible challenges for the Republican Party's efforts to broaden its base and retain support in critical swing states ahead of next year's midterm elections.
What To Know
According to the poll, Trump's approval rating with the voting bloc is 28 percent. His overall approval rating is 39 percent, and his disapproval mark is 57 percent. The poll was taken from December 20 to December 22 among 1,592 respondents and has a margin of error of 3.4 percent.
In last week's poll, the president's approval rating with Hispanics was 38 percent and 39 percent in a poll taken from December 5 to December 8.
"Trump's net approval is down from the past two weeks of Economist / YouGov Polls, when he registered net approval of -13 and -14," YouGov's Allen Houston noted in an email to Newsweek on Tuesday.
The last time the president's approval rating dipped below 28 percent with Hispanics was in a poll conducted from October 17 to October 20, in which he landed 25 percent approval.
What People Are Saying
Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff for policy and Homeland Security adviser, to Fox News in part on Tuesday: "The most important point of all, the polling shows overwhelming support for President Trump across every single issue and dimension. We knew the man was an economic wizard, but ... how do you get inflation from 30 percent to almost 2 percent in a few months? He defied what everybody said was possible."
Fox News co-host Jessica Tarlov, on X Monday: "Watching Republicans right now feels less like a movement and more like a food fight—arguing over clout, conspiracies, and how Christian America should be. JD Vance touted Trump’s big coalition, but the numbers matter: Donald Trump is sitting around 29% with Gen Z and 32% with Latino voters—basically back to 2020 levels. Those voters weren’t locked in. Winning them back won’t be automatic."
What Happens Next
With Hispanic voters representing a larger share of the electorate, continued declines could hinder the GOP's hopes for broadening its coalition in key battleground states.
Upcoming polling may also offer an early test of whether Trump’s positions on immigration and the economy will erode or gather support, or if changes to these policies could reverse current trends.
