Close popoverArne Slot bemoans Premier League set-piece trend

Liverpool have become the latest victim of Wolves’ surprise bounce as the Premier League bottom club snatched victory in stoppage time thanks to a wicked deflection.

There was next to nothing to speak of after an incredibly drab first half, but that all changed when Wolves took a shock lead with 12 minutes of normal time to play. Rodrigo Gomes’ dinked finish put the hosts on course for another Molineux upset, having taken points off leaders Arsenal and Aston Villa in the past fortnight.

The Reds hit back just five minutes later through Mohamed Salah, ending his longest ever Liverpool goal drought that started on 1 November when it seemingly mattered most.

However, it would be in vain as Andre’s 94th-minute strike deflected off Joe Gomez and past a helpless Alisson, sending manager Rob Edwards running down the touchline as Wolves sealed back-to-back league wins for the first time since April 2025.

The first time was so nice...

Liverpool will have to return to Wolverhampton sooner than they perhaps would’ve liked after tonight’s last-gasp defeat.

They face Wolves at Molineux in the FA Cup fifth round in just three days time. It’s a Friday night game, again under the lights - an identical meeting.

“We've made Liverpool angry, so we know how difficult it will be on Friday,” Rob Edwards said.

Will Arne Slot’s side wreak some revenge? We’ll find out in 72 hours - but for now, Wolves will savour this win!

Arne Slot laments another late goal conceded

"We are losing far too many football games and dropping points,” Slot told TNT Sports.

“Was it again in extra-time that we conceded? The three times we lost in the last 22 games were all three in extra time.”

Rob Edwards: 'I've lost myself in the moment there'

"You've got to enjoy the moment,” Edwards told TNT Sports. “They're a brilliant football club with an amazing manager and loads of great players. It was just a big, big night for us.

"I know I've lost myself in that moment there. I'm enjoying it and people might be thinking ‘well you bottom of the league’ but you saw the energy around the place and you have to enjoy that and we're trying to trying to turn things around.”

Virgil van Dijk: Defeat is 'down to ourselves'

"I think it's down to ourselves,” Van Dijk told TNT Sports.

“It was slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession and wrong decision-making. We didn't concede chances but if you perform like that then a result like this can be a result of that and that's a fact. It was disappointing.”

Arne Slot bemoans winner 'that wasn't even a chance'

“A bad result,” Slot told TNT Sports.

“We were getting closer and closer to scoring a goal, but then conceded probably the first moment they arrived in our box. We were then close to the winner with Mo Salah on the counter-attack and Virgil’s header.

“But in the end it’s because of a deflected shot that wasn’t even a chance.”

Wolves sabotage mission continues but Liverpool’s woes go beyond one cruel moment

For the second time in four days, Rob Edwards set off down the touchline in manic celebration. Wolves, as their fans had chorused, are bound for the Championship, but on the way they are bloodying the noses of those with ambitions of Champions League qualification. First Aston Villa and now Liverpool have fallen at Molineux.

A night when the champions could have gone third instead ended with the greater possibility this season will end in failure. There was a familiarity to the finale. Liverpool have only lost three times in 22 games but all three have come with a goal in added time, whether to Bournemouth, Manchester City or now Wolves. Liverpool could call it cruel, when the decider needed a deflection, when they had hit the woodwork twice, but another late show calls into question their game management.

90+6 mins: Chiesa lets fly from the edge of the box but it’s straight at Sa.

We’re past the six allotted minutes - and up the other end, Wolves have won a foul. That might just do it.
