The Boston Red Sox revamped their roster this winter in an effort to make a stronger push for the American League East division title. That revamp was led by adding Ranger Suarez to the starting rotation and turning a weakness from last year into a strength for this season.
The organization lost Alex Bregman, and while they replaced him with Caleb Durbin, that doesn't mean the Red Sox should be done making moves. The Houston Astros still need to find a trade partner for Isaac Paredes, and insider Ken Rosenthal believes Boston is still a good fit.
..."The Red Sox, even after acquiring Caleb Durbin from Milwaukee, still look like the best fit for Paredes — they could play him at third and Durbin at second without needing to rely on Marcelo Mayer," Rosenthal wrote for The Athletic. "The Astros are not getting back Wilyer Abreu, whom they traded in 2022 for catcher Christian Vázquez. A deal constructed around Jarren Duran should remain within reach. By moving Duran, the Red Sox would create DH at-bats for Masataka Yoshida and eventually Triston Casas, who could return in May from a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee."
This is the type of trade that would benefit both teams, as neither would have a logjam at a particular position any longer. Both players are expendable in their current organizations, but they can certainly use a reset and a fresh start.
If the Red Sox added Paredes, Durbin would shift to second base, as Rosenthal noted. This move would make Mayer a utility player off the bench, where he could thrive in a lower-pressure environment.
