Eric Morris becomes the second hire of the college football coaching cycle.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe North Texas coach who led his team to a school-best 10-1 record this year will be headed to Stillwater. He accepted the job to be the next coach at Oklahoma State, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Morris will coach the Mean Green for the rest of the regular season, including the American Conference title game and possible College Football Playoff appearance. He went 21-15 over the past three seasons at North Texas.
Morris replaces Mike Gundy in Stillwater, who was fired after more than two decades. The 58-year-old was the second-longest tenured FBS coach and left after two bad seasons, including a disappointing loss to Tulsa in Week 4.Gundy put up eight double-digit win seasons and 18 bowl appearances over the course of his time with the program. However, the Cowboys have been behind the current era of college football. It's one of the major reasons why Gundy negotiated a restructured contract to stay at OSU during the offseason. He agreed to a flat $15 million buyout, which saved OSU over $10 million.
North Texas is preparing for Morris' potential departure and searching for potential replacements.
