Another weekend, another Masked Singer UK reveal – and this time, it was Gargoyle taking off their mask!

The 2026 series got off to a typically bonkers start, as Joel Dommett returned to host everyone’s favourite guessing game.

And after a string of shocking reveals thus far, tonight’s Spooktacular elimination was just as unexpected.

Joining the unmasked club was none other than American singer-songwriter Marcella Detroit, who had been performing in the elaborate attire all along.

Having lost out in a sing-off against Sloth, she lifted her mask and sent the studio audience into a frenzy, with previous guesses thrown out, including Cyndi Lauper and Ruby Wax.

Marcella, 73, is best known professionally as Marcy Levy and as a member of Shakespears Sister, which she joined in 1988 with former Bananarama singer Siobhan Fahey.

Their most well-known songs include You’re History, I Don’t Care, and Hello (Turn Your Radio On). She also sang vocals for their biggest hit, Stay, which spent eight consecutive weeks at number one in the UK in 1992.

The following year, she left the band and had her own UK top 20 hit with I Believe in 1994. In 2002, Marcella formed the Marcy Levy Band.

She’s also no stranger to a singing contest, having finished third in the 2010 ITV series Popstar to Operastar.

As for the Masked Singer clues pointing towards her identity, not one panel member managed to suss them out.

At one point, three peppers were shown on stage. This was a reference to the songstress appearing in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band film in the late 70s.

Another clue was a ‘Gargoyl’ poster, missing an E, which was a nod to how Shakespears Sister also dropped the vowel from their band name.

‘We should’ve got you!’, said Jonathan Ross (Picture: ITV) ‘It’s really difficult to walk!’, she joked (Picture: ITV)

Reacting to the big unveiling, fans took to X in bewilderment that the music icon was before their eyes.

‘Wow…Marcella Detroit legend’, wrote @g14christine.

‘Can’t believe i missed that one. I was listening to #ShakespearsSister just last night!’, said @sleepycatt.

‘Marcella Detroit has still got it what a song Stay is’, praised @mishybabez_.

Speaking in a post-unmasking Q&A, Marcella admitted she was ‘really sad’ to be eliminated, declaring it an ‘incredible experience’.

When it was put to her that The Masked Singer could be a potential career highlight, even though she has written with Eric Clapton and opened for David Bowie, the musician replied: ‘Yeah, why not?

‘There’s a mystic about it. It’s kind of challenging, but it’s also fun because no one really knows who you are. You can just have fun with it.’

In true Masked Singer fashion, viewers have been kept well and truly on their toes up until now, not knowing which singer, presenter, or comedian could pop up from beneath a furry animal head next.

Launch weekend kicked off by introducing some Masked Singer firsts, as pop star Anne-Marie and Little Britain’s Matt Lucas were unveiled as the lead singers of the studio’s house bands. They were dressed as Goldfish and Emperor Penguin, respectively, of course.

But then the real competition began, with The One Show’s Alex Jones becoming the first celebrity eliminated, taking off her Disc Jockey mask, much to the shock of panellists Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama, and Mo Gilligan.

Next came Teabag’s reveal, with rapper Professor Green unveiled to be underneath the costume in the ultimate 2000s throwback.

Then last weekend, we had Yak’s unmasking, who was discovered to be none other than Sex Pistols icon John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten.

Remaining in the contest for now are contestants such as Red Panda, Monkey Business, Conkers, and Toastie, all of whom will be hoping to take the crown from 2025 winner Samantha Barks and emerge as the series winner.
