Former Minnesota Twins, Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Pressly announced retirement on Saturday, according to a statement from Pressly released by MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.
"After spending the last 19 years in professional baseball, I’ve made the decision to hang up my cleats and step away from the mound. It’s bittersweet, but what a ride it’s been," Pressly wrote in his statement.
Pressly started his career with the Twins in 2013. He came up through the Boston Red Sox system, but was claimed off waivers by the Twins in 2012. He played for the Twins until 2018, when he was traded to the Astros for Gilberto Celestino and Jorge Alcala.
...In 281 games for the Twins, he had a 3.75 ERA. Despite finishing 56 games, he had just one save. With the Astros, he became a key part of their bullpen right away. In 2019, his first full season with the team, he was named an All-Star for the first time. He posted a 2.32 ERA in 55 games.
He was named an All-Star again in 2021, posting a 2.25 ERA in 64 games. He also notched 26 saves. The Astros went on to lose the World Series that season to the Atlanta Braves. Pressly was back in 2022, helping the Astros win a World Series this time. In 50 regular-season games, he posted a 2.98 ERA, but it was what he did in the postseason that should be remembered.
"Hoisting that World Series trophy in 2022, that’s something I always dreamed of,” Pressly said in his statement. “I’ll carry that joy forever. Houston, you’ve got our hearts — it’s our forever home now. Thank you.”
He made 10 appearances that postseason, pitching 11 innings. He had six saves and did not allow a single run while striking out 13 batters. He had a 3.54 ERA in the following two seasons, and the Astros traded him to the Cubs for Juan Bello. Last season, he had a 4.35 ERA in 44 games.
Pressly finished his career pitching in 667 regular-season games. He had a 3.33 career ERA, 117 saves and 721 strikeouts. He had a 2.78 career postseason ERA and 14 postseason saves. He finished with one World Series championship and two All-Star selections.
