By Liz O'ConnellShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberA woman attempting to film a cheerful selfie video with a group of cows quickly found herself in a moment of panic after realizing one of the animals was not what she thought.
The incident, captured in an Instagram video and shared on the account @kay.ivanovsky, shows Kaylee Ivanovsky smiling and filming herself while standing near cattle in a field during a visit to her in-laws in Montgomery, Texas. She told Newsweek via email that the cows belong to the neighbors, and it was her first time seeing them.
At first glance, one of the animals closest to her appeared calm, but she realized it was not a cow when it started bucking. She was within inches of a bull.
Startled, her smile instantly faded. Ivanovsky said her first instinct was to distance herself and let her father-in-law handle the issue. He corralled about 10 cattle back into the yard—a process that took roughly 30 minutes—with the bull being the last to go back.
..."It was freezing outside, and he was in shorts, but all he cared about was getting the cows home safely and making sure no one in the neighborhood got hurt while they were out," she said.
This became a first for the family. While they live in a neighborhood with plenty of horses and farm animals, she said they've never seen cows on the loose before. They had broken through part of the fence.
Looking back, Ivanovsky realizes the bull was "fired up" as he was trying to protect the baby. He likely saw them as a threat and acted in a way to give warning. She credits her father-in-law for remaining calm and calls him the hero of the story.
The November 30 Instagram video elicited a variety of reactions, from some viewers crying with laughter to others warning to leave animals alone.
"You seem so calm. I would have been screaming," commented a viewer.
Another added: "You're very lucky. This could have easily turned into something horrible."
Someone else wrote: "You lucky he pumped fake, you were about to get sent to the moon first class ticket."
Ivanovsky hopes her experience will help highlight the importance of being attentive and respectful around livestock, especially as animals can be unpredictable and situations can turn perilous.
"It was an honest mistake and definitely a lesson learned," she said. "I need to be more careful and mindful around livestock. I realize now how incredibly dangerous it can be."
