Luka Doncic took responsibility for Lakers' blowout loss to Suns

Luka Doncic has played such outstanding basketball to start this season that it was hard for Los Angeles Lakers fans to watch an ugly stretch he had late in the second quarter of Monday's game versus the Phoenix Suns.

After scoring 20 points in the first quarter for the second night in a row, he made two free throws with 4:26 left in the second period to put the Lakers up 48-47. He then committed four turnovers in a two-minute stretch, and at the end of the stretch, Phoenix led 58-50. That was when the game got away from Los Angeles, and the team never recovered.

In all, Doncic had 38 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, but he turned the basketball over nine times in L.A.'s 125-108 defeat. In his postgame press conference, he quickly and readily took responsibility for the loss.

"That was my fault," Doncic said. "No way I can have nine turnovers in a game."

L.A. had a total of 22 turnovers, and 10 of them came in that decisive second period. It was outscored 28-2 in fast-break points, and much of that was as a result of its excessive miscues.

The Lakers still have a 15-5 record and remain in second place in the Western Conference, but their winning streak ended at seven games. They will now start a challenging three-game road trip on Thursday against the surprising Toronto Raptors, who currently have a 14-7 record.
