Texas A&M quarterback and former Montgomery Bell Academy star Marcel Reed has the Aggies headed toward a College Football Playoff berth entering the final game of the regular season.

Now he's been recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in college football, being named a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award on Nov. 25. The award recognizes the nation's top NCAA quarterback and Reed is joined by Indiana's Fernando Mendoza and Ohio State's Julian Sayin as finalists.

The National College Football Awards Association recognizes the nation's top players in nine categories that include the Maxwell Award (player of the year), Outland Trophy (most outstanding interior lineman), Paycom Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back) and Doak Walker Award (top running back) among others.

The winners will be announced during The Home Depot College Football Awards that begins at 6 p.m. CT (ESPN) on Dec. 12.

In Reed's first full season as a starter at Texas A&M, he's thrown for 2,752 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions as the Aggies sit at 11-0 and No. 3 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. A&M travels to face Texas on Nov. 28.

Reed supplanted Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman during the 2024 college football season, starting eight of 11 games after redshirting the previous season.

Reed was a four-year starter under former longtime MBA coach Marty Euverard, becoming the first freshman to ever start at QB for MBA. He led the Big Red to consecutive TSSAA state championship game appearances in 2021 and 2022 while being named Tennessee Titans DII-AAA Mr. Football in 2022.

Reed — whose father, Rod, was the Tennessee State football coach for 10 seasons (2010-20) — passed for 6,357 yards and 62 touchdowns at MBA, while rushing for 2,277 yards and 38 touchdowns.
