Ronaldo cleared to play World Cup 2026 opener

Cristiano Ronaldo has been cleared to feature in Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee confirmed that his punishment for recent red card will be 1 match suspension only.. with two additional game suspended, dependent on future behaviour.

Ronaldo was sent off in the clash against Ireland during the penultimate round of World Cup qualifying sparking fears that he could face 2 or even 3 match ban at the finals.

According to the ruling, FIFA considered the 40 year old captain’s impeccable disciplinary history.. this being the first red card of his Portugal career in 226 international appearance.

The committee therefore imposed:

  • 1 match ban (served in Portugal’s match vs Armenia)

  • 2 match suspended, applied only if Ronaldo commits another serious offence

Portugal sealed qualification in his absence beating Armenia to confirm their place at the 2026 World Cup under Roberto Martinez.

Ronaldo’s final World Cup mission

The World Cup remains the only major trophy missing from Ronaldo’s international cabinet. He has won:
