With Draymond Green out of the Golden State Warriors' rotation against the Utah Jazz on Monday, Nov. 24, Gary Payton II was tasked with stepping into a larger playmaking role. Payton, 32, isn't the passer or defensive event creator that Green is; however, his direct style of play opens up playmaking opportunities, especially when attacked by an overstretched defense.
Payton ended the night with a game-high eight assists, along with nine points and six rebounds. When speaking to the media after the game, Stephen Curry praised Payton's on-court production and how he found ways to spearhead the Warriors' offense
"Me and GP have such a great chemistry," Curry said. "He's a very unique player in the sense of who the opposing team decides to match up against them. And then our pick and roll options, off-ball actions. We just kinda know where each other is, and when he's shooting the ball and gets those open looks, that always helps. So nobody can do what Draymond does, but GP does it his own way with his athletic ability to get downhill, DHO, set good screens, and make defenses pay that way."
Green was out of the Warriors' rotation due to a right mid-foot sprain, as reported by ESPN's Anthony Slater. Payton stepped into the starting lineup and made an impact on both sides of the floor, helping the Warriors secure their 10th win of the season in the process.
