Maxton Hall Season 2 has come to an end, and it's needless to say that fans are still unwell after watching the finale. With Ruby (Harriet Herbig-Matten) being expelled once rumors of her and Professor Sutton (Eidin Jalali) begin to spread on campus, her future at Oxford turned into a distant dream. At this point, she only has James (Damian Hardung) by her side to console her, and even their relationship is put at risk by Mortimer's (Fedja van Huêt) looming threats. Season 2's final episode sealed the couple's fate, proving that Mortimer will continue to go above and beyond to separate them. Still, in the middle of the tragedy, there is a glimmer of hope.

Since Season 1, fans of the Prime Video hit have been speculating about Percy (Hyun Wanner) being James and Lydia's (Sonja Weißer) biological father, and in the finale, the chauffeur is seen taking flowers to Cordelia's (Clelia Sarto) grave. Although there is nothing unusual about this thoughtful gesture considering that Percy worked for the family for many years, it does hint at the possibility of them being romantically involved. With James and Lydia learning that they haven't inherited any of their mother's assets, Percy's connection to Cordelia might be their saving grace.

'Maxton Hall' Season 2 Hints at Percy and Cordelia's Romantic Connection

It's no secret that Percy has a lot of care for both Lydia and James, with Season 1 showing him and the latter often engaging in deep conversations during their car rides. Percy has also been a loyal confidante for James, especially when it comes to his relationship with Ruby, often helping them meet in Season 1 without Mortimer's knowledge. Although the chauffeur is a man of few words, he has proven time and time again that he is trustworthy and caring towards Cordelia's children, and maybe there is a deeper reason for it. At the beginning of Season 2, Percy tells Ruby that he is a third-generation worker at the Beaufort household, and that he spent most of his youth at the luxurious estate. His visit to Cordelia's grave only makes viewers question whether his proximity to the deceased was more romantic than amicable, especially given that he kisses his necklace while looking at her gravestone.

Although Mona Kasten's book trilogy doesn't reveal that Percy is James and Lydia's biological father, the series could deviate from its source material. It has done so several times this season, such as introducing James' car accident (an event that isn't in the book) as a catalyst for the protagonist's therapy journey. The series also makes Mortimer more ruthless, with him being directly responsible for rescinding Ruby's scholarship to Oxford and getting rid of the bakery that Ruby's parents ran. If the Prime Video adaptation is already upping the stakes by making Mortimer more cruel than he is in the books, then it is also possible that the series could explore more of Percy and Cordelia's past and even lean into the fan theory of him being the twins' real father, as opposed to Mortimer.

Season 2 has made it clear that the Beaufort patriarch will do whatever it takes to ensure that the family business remains on top. Although Episode 5 shows Mortimer having an emotional breakdown, mourning the loss of his late wife and expressing his willingness to make amends with his own son and daughter, that sentiment evaporates shortly after when he convinces Alice Campbell (Proschat Madani) to withdraw Ruby's scholarship. Mortimer's actions prove that he prefers to be at odds with James and Lydia than collaborating with them to further the Beaufort empire. After all, Lydia has shown in several instances that she has ideas to elevate Young Beaufort, but Mortimer has shut down any opportunities to include her in meetings or allow her to be associated with the family business.

Mortimer's Behavior in Season 2 Indicates That He Only Cares About the Beaufort Empire

In the finale, Mortimer and the twins are present in a meeting to discuss Cordelia's will, and it is revealed that the latter has entrusted all of her assets to her husband. Despite this revelation sparking outrage, with Cordelia's sister even wanting to contest it, Mortimer's power reached new heights. With complete ownership of the business, and determined to ruin Ruby and James' chances at happiness, it will be hard for the main couple to maintain their relationship with Mortimer's devious schemes in the way. There is also a very slim chance that Mortimer will allow Lydia to carry on with her pregnancy once he finds out about it. The twins' only hope lies in Percy's hands, with his necklace being the key to finding out whether Mortimer has manipulated Cordelia's will or not.

If Percy and Cordelia were as close as they seemed while she was still alive, it would be no surprise if she left the details of her will at his discretion. As Season 3 — which has already finished filming — continues to explore how Ruby and James face adversity to stay together, the key that Percy is holding onto could lead them to the truth, setting them free from Mortimer once and for all. If Cordelia's will was indeed altered, James and Lydia would each get access to the assets their mother left behind, and Mortimer could go from being the sole proprietor of Beaufort to losing everything.

One thing is for certain, Ruby and James can never move on with their lives if Mortimer remains as powerful and influential as he is. The same applies to Lydia, whose chances at being a mother are ever so slim if Mortimer uncovers the truth. Mortimer's ruin would allow for the twins to finally get their happy endings, after enduring so much sorrow and emotional manipulation from their father. If the series chooses to make Percy their biological father, that would make Mortimer's downfall even more dramatic, granting the chauffeur the opportunity to turn his life around and be the loving and attentive parent James and Lydia so desperately need. After all the suffering they had to go through with losing their mother, and having their love lives tested, having Percy as their guardian would be the ultimate silver lining.
