Hollywood star Kate Winslet walked the red carpet at the premiere of her new film alongside her son Joe Anders, 21, on Wednesday night.

The Titanic actress has made her directorial debut with Goodbye June for Netflix, which was inspired by the death of her mother and written by her son Joe as his first screenplay.

Joe has movies in his blood as Kate shares him with her second husband, filmmaker Sir Sam Mendes.

The youngster, who studied at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield and started working on the script while there, aged just 19, towered over his thrilled mum as they posed for photographers.

The pair matched in simple black outfits, with 50-year-old Kate in a simple form-sitting floor-length black dress with a belt around her middle and gold and black earrings.

Joe was dressed in a plain black suit, which he wore with an open-necked white shirt, standing with his arm around Kate.

Goodbye June boasts a stacked cast with Dame Helen Mirren as the titular June and Timothy Spall as her husband, while Andrea Riseborough, Johnny Flynn and Toni Collette play siblings alongside Kate.

Kate told the Press Association that she was ‘proud’ of her son for penning the film, who for the first three weeks of production on Goodbye June was away working as an actor.

‘I felt proud of him every day, every single day, and in fact for the first three weeks he wasn’t there because he was filming something as an actor overseas.

‘And I had a little Snoopy patch, and it says Joe Cool on it, and I would just stick it on various different parts of my body, on my bum, on my chest, on my leg, until he came back, and I was like, “oh, now you’re back, I can put this patch away”, because it kept falling off anyway.

‘So that was my way of keeping him (involved).’

The Christmas drama follows four siblings whose lives change when their mother’s health takes a turn for the worse during the festive period.

Kate explained: ‘I just wanted to make a film that felt authentic and real.

‘I also didn’t want to make a story that was about someone who dies, because it’s really not, it’s actually about the life that is given to the people who are left behind and that family.

‘And so it mattered to make it real, to keep it relatable for audiences, and to set it in our NHS space, which is massively undervalued, and we need to give credit and honour the people who do that incredible work, especially our palliative care workers.

‘And so really highlighting that and seeing that mattered enormously to us as well.’
