Alabama High School Football: Thompson breezes by Opelika for 7A crown

Postseason format changes brought on by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) took away what was becoming the annual Thompson vs. Phenix City Central state championship game.

On Wednesday night at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, the Warriors would take on a different opponent this time around in the Opelika Bulldogs for the AHSAA Class 7A state title. The end result was a much more anti-climatic ending to the state’s highest classification championship game.

Alabama commitment Trent Seaborn threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns in the first half to lead the Warriors to a 48-10 rout of the Bulldogs for the Class 7A title. With the win, Thompson comes away with their sixth 7A state championship of the last seven years.

The Warriors needed a thrilling 35-34 win over the aforementioned Red Devils in the state semifinal round just to reach the state championship game. For all intents and purposes, Thompson’s matchup with Phenix City Central may have all well and been for the state title as the Warriors made it evidently clear in the first two quarters this one was not going to be close whatsoever.

Seaborn in the first half diced up the Opelika secondary and ended up completing 12 of 21 passes for 204 yards and three scores going into halftime.

Opelika senior fullback Blake Johnson would score a touchdown in the waning minutes of the game for the Bulldogs to avoid being unable to find the endzone on the night.
