Running back CJ Campbell has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal after one season with the Scarlet Knights. Pete Nakos of On3 first reported the news.
Campbell began his college career at Florida State, working his way up the Seminoles’ depth chart after joining FSU as a walk-on. He then transferred to Florida Atlantic, starting eleven games for the Owls in 2024 and enjoying a breakout season. Campbell ran for 1,310 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns, ranking eighth in the American Athletic Conference with 70.3 rushing yards per game, and earned All-AAC Third Team honors.

Against Miami (OH), he ran for 45 yards on 10 carries, but suffered a season-ending ankle injury against Norfolk State. He finished the season with 22 carries for 119 yards, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Although he was known for his pass-catching ability, he did not record a catch this season, likely due to the talented receiving room.
Even with Campbell leaving, Rutgers’ rushing attack remains in a good place for next season. Antwan Raymond had a breakout season this year as a sophomore, ranking third in the Big Ten with 1,241 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, highlighted by his 41-carry, 240-yard performance against Maryland. He finished the season with a 29-carry, 189-yard performance against Penn State, at times putting the offense on his back during drives.
Samuel Brown V has one more year of eligibility after only playing in four games this season, while Ja’Shon Benjamin is set to return for his senior season. Like Campbell, Benjamin provides the quickness and versatility compared to Raymond’s bruising style, which gives Rutgers a thunder and lightning element in the backfield.
Behind them, redshirt freshman Edd Guerrier and true freshman Terrell Mitchell saw playing time late in one-sided games, while Rutgers added Michael Dukes as part of its 2026 recruiting class. As for Campbell, he will have one year of eligibility left when he finds his new portal destination.
