Two of the stars of Spartacus: House of Ashur break down how this sequel show plays with Roman history. House of Ashur is a sequel to the four-season series Spartacus, which began with Blood and Sand in 2010. The series traces the story of Spartacus, a gladiator who fought against the Romans.
Over a decade after the original series ended, House of Ashur is set to be the latest franchise entry, with the series premiering on December 5. Nick Tarabay will reprise his titular role of Ashur in the series, now stepping into the main part. The supporting cast includes Claudia Black, Ivana Baquero, Dan Hamill, Jamaica Vaughn, Graham McTavish, Tenika Davis, and Lucy Lawless.
In a pre-release interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Tarabay and Black discuss how Spartacus: House of Ashur tweaks Roman history in order to tell its story. The pair was asked to explain how the political unrest in the world of the show affects their characters. Taraby explained that it "affects Ashur tremendously."
The character is "surrounded by schemes." Black went onto explain the challenging situation her character, Cossutia, is in as "resources everywhere are dwindling." Check out the full quotes from Tarabay and Black below:
ScreenRant: The Slave Rebellion has been defeated in this timeline, but there's still political unrest with the Triumvirate. How does that affect your characters, if at all?
Nick E. Tarabay: It affects Ashur tremendously. I mean, he's constantly feeling the pressure of this. He's under pressure, and he's surrounded by schemes, and he's almost helpless. I mean, there's only so much room for him to maneuver, and he's got to use room that extremely well. Otherwise, it's hasta la vista, baby!
Claudia Black: Very much so, because the decisions that Gabinius makes, with regard to the powerful Triumvirate of Rome, will shape what resources Cossutia's family has. Resources everywhere are dwindling, and however Gabinius chooses to position himself and with whom he aligns himself will very much determine their future.
It's such a gamble trying to control these men, who all start seeing the power vacuum as an opportunity and want to come in and usurp the power as it currently exists.
Ashur holding a goblet in Spartacus: House of Ashur
The Spartacus series has featured several depictions of real-life figures over the course of the franchise, including the titular gladiator himself. Ashur, however, is a fictional character created for the series. As such, any show with him as the lead would naturally feature some bending of Roman history.
In this show's case, the series will have to decide what events have happened, as Hullender puts "in this timeline." As Black and Tarabay acknowledge, the historical events portrayed directly impact these characters whether the characters themselves are derived from real people or not.
Nonetheless, the plot that both actors describe includes some interesting dynamics at play. The loss of resources will put quite the strain on the people, furthering the tension that the politics have already created.
So far, whatever Spartacus: House of Ashur is doing seems to be working for critics as it has a perfect 100% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. While only six critics have reviewed it so far in this pre-release stage, this early reception shows that the series is doing something right.
This is also a better start than the original Spartacus series, whose reviews were more up and down. The way the series is playing with history will certainly be under scrutiny by history buffs post-release. Tarabay and Black's comments offer an exciting tease to the drama afoot in the upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur.
