A recent Disney event in Italy (per Avengers Updates) showcased the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, presenting Sam Wilson, Thor, Loki, Shang-Chi, Falcon and Ant-Man in one group as 'the Heroic Avengers.' The apparent confirmation of Joaquin Torres serving on the main Avengers team makes him a surprising first.

So far in the entire history of the MCU, every Earth-based hero recruited to the team is someone who has already joined in the comics. However, due to his recent debut in 2015, Joaquin Torres has no history with the comic Avengers - the only team he's officially joined are the teenage Champions. This marks the first time a hero has joined the team in the MCU before the comics (not counting some unusual exceptions, which we'll cover shortly.)

While some fans doubt the newly revealed roster is accurate, it doesn't really matter in the case of Falcon. Captain America: Brave New World made it clear that Danny Ramirez's Torres is essentially Sam Wilson's first recruit for a new Avengers roster, and it would be bizarre to reverse that promise in Doomsday.

Is Falcon the First MCU-Exclusive Avengers Hero?

It's a big deal for the MCU to move out ahead of the comics, with every Avengers movie so far being an explicit reimagining of an iconic comic story. However, Falcon isn't technically the first MCU-exclusive member of the team.

That award goes to Rocket Raccoon and Nebula, who joined the Avengers during the five years between Infinity War and Endgame. While notable, these deviations were neither significant nor surprising. The two spend most of their membership offscreen, leading into a vast team-up of every MCU hero that they'd appear in anyway - while they technically joined the Avengers in the MCU, they never felt like Avengers.

Nebula kind of joined the Avengers in 1988's Avengers #297, but was later revealed to be Ravonna Renslayer in disguise.

In the comics, Rocket Raccoon and Nebula have spent very little time on Earth, and it would be unusual for them to ever join the team (none of the main Guardians ever have.) In contrast, Joaquin Torres' Falcon is a protégé of Sam Wilson and someone who will undoubtedly one day join Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Indeed, doing so will be a huge moment for the hero - essentially where his larger arc is heading. Now, the comics will seemingly have to consider how that moment contrasts with the MCU's version.

Marvel Could Still Avoid This Rule-Breaking First

The MCU has interpreted comic characters and stories in some innovative ways, but it's highly avoidant of introducing ideas that haven't been established in the comics first. It's interesting that Joaquin Torres' Falcon is the exception, and this could indicate big things in the future for Danny Ramirez's hero.

Of course, with over a year until Avengers: Doomsday's release on December 18, 2026, there is still time for the comics to get there first. With Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley set to take over the comic series as of December 3's Avengers #800, it's possible Torres could still sneak comic Avengers membership under the wire before he takes to the big screen alongside Sam Wilson's full Avengers roster.

As Avengers: Doomsday approaches, Joaquin Torres' Falcon is set to become the first Earth-based hero to join the planet's premier superteam in the MCU before the comics, breaking a rule that's persisted as long as the Avengers have existed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers #800 is coming December 3, 2025, from Marvel Comics.
