Hype is building for Illumination's upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, especially after fans discovered a small easter egg that pays tribute to one of the biggest anime series of the last decade. No one would expect it, but that upcoming adaptation of Nintendo's most iconic character actually contains a subtle reference to My Hero Academia.
The tribute comes in from the upcoming film's Japanese dub. The Super Galaxy Movie introduces Bowser Jr. to the cast. While Bowser Jr. will be voiced by Benny Safdie in English, his Japanese voice actor will be more than a little familiar to anime fans. In Japan, Deku's voice actor Daiki Yamashita will be voicing Bowser's son.
What makes this funny is that Bowser's voice actor in the original Super Mario Movie was Kenta Miyake, the iconic actor behind My Hero Academia's All Might.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Sets Up a My Hero Academia Reunion
While it's unclear if the Deku and All Might reunion is intentional, it's undeniably a cute casting choice.
All Might and Deku have an iconic bond in My Hero Academia, with the latter always looking up to the former. This, of course, grows into mutual respect throughout the series as Deku develops his power and eventually stands on equal footing with his mentor.
This is why it's so fun seeing the duo cast together in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Bowser and Bowser Jr. have a very similar relationship to Deku and All Might, but coming at it from an opposite angle.
While Deku's respect for All Might comes from a good and noble place, Bowser Jr. typically goes a little too far in worshiping Bowser.
In this way, Bowser Jr. and Bowser are almost a twisted reflection of Deku and All Might. All of this adds a layer to the casting that's fun for fans in the know.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Isn't All Might and Deku's Only Chance to Reunite
Izuku Midoriya surprised in My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia's final season is currently airing, meaning that Yamashita and Miyake's time working together in that series is coming to an end, at least for the time being. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie isn't the only opportunity for the two actors to reunite, however.
Yamashita plays Hokuro while Miyake plays King Bosse in the Ranking of Kings anime. Unfortunately, the two characters don't get much of a chance to interact, given that one of them is deceased during the main story.
Still, with that series earning the critical acclaim that it did, there is a good chance that Yamashita and Miyake will return to it, giving the two famous My Hero Academia actors a chance to work together after their work on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has wrapped.
