Nearly five years after the franchise's previous attempt to return to the screen, a new Paranormal Activity movie is officially in development. Since its launch in 2009, the found footage horror series has centered on a variety of families and characters attempting to capture apparent supernatural hauntings on camera, only to subsequently become tormented by a more demonic force.
Originally created by director Oren Peli and produced by Blumhouse on a very modest $15,000 budget, the original Paranormal Activity's $194 million blockbuster success spawned a franchise including three direct sequels, one prequel, and two spinoff films. The last installment, The Marked Ones, came in 2021 after its predecessor was initially announced as the finale. Having released on Paramount+ to negative reviews, it seemed to have sealed any kind of future for the franchise.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Paramount Pictures is reteaming with Blumhouse for a new Paranormal Activity movie. In addition to the indie horror studio, who has been with the franchise since its inception, James Wan has come aboard through his Atomic Monster production banner, which merged with Blumhouse in early 2024. Wan wrote about his joining the series in the following statement:
James Wan: I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying. I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise.
Jason Blum also released a statement celebrating the announcement of the new Paranormal Activity movie, describing it as a "rebirth of the franchise that started it all for Blumhouse," while expressing his excitement for Wan to have a hand in the production. After quipping about the change in budget from the original movie's shoestring figure, Blum also shared his eagerness to reunite with Paramount for the film:
Jason Blum: I’ll be actively involved with [James] to introduce this new chapter. Thankfully, we’re able to spend a little more than the $15,000 we had on the first movie, but one thing will remain the same — do not see it alone. We look forward to partnering with Josh Greenstein, Dana Goldberg, David Ellison, Jeff Shell and their teams at Paramount as we bring Paranormal Activity back to life.
Greenstein and Goldberg, Paramount's co-chairs, also responded to the film's development with their own statement, expressing on behalf of the studio they are "thrilled to reignite the iconic Paranormal Activity franchise with two of the horror genre's most visionary talents" in Blum and Wan. They also singled out Blum for his "role in shaping this franchise into a global cultural touchstone," while being excited to see him partner with "James' singular taste and track record for innovative storytelling."
Ever since the movie was a runaway box office hit, Paramount and Blumhouse have made numerous attempts to recapture the same success with the Paranormal Activity franchise, though always to mixed results. Reviews were consistently negative in later installments of the series, while the box office peaked with the 2011 prequel installment at $207 million. Beyond lacking the same unique hook of the original, most seemed to feel that the found footage genre was on the downtrend by 2015's Ghost Dimension, which sent the franchise off on a financially successful note.
However, in the wake of the merger between their banners, Blum and Wan have clearly been revitalized to keep their roster of franchises alive at Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Prior to the new Paranormal Activity development, it was revealed Blumhouse had bought out Twisted Pictures' stake in the Saw franchise, with plans to develop a new film that has Wan and former creative collaborator Leigh Whannell back in charge.
Additionally, Blum, Wan and Sony set about developing a proper sixth installment in the Insidious franchise after The Red Door served as a finale for the Lambert family's story. Also bringing back Lin Shaye after a brief cameo in the 2023 installment, the movie is currently slated for an August 2026 release, while the previously announced spinoff, Thread, remains in development hell nearly four years after it was announced.

The Full Timeline Of The Paranormal Activity Movies Explained
The Paranormal Activity franchise is comprised of seve films that include sequels and prequels. Here is a complete breakdown of the movies' timeline.
PostsConsidering Blum is describing the new Paranormal Activity movie as being a "rebirth" of the franchise, this could point to the film taking a variety of directions with its story. With The Ghost Dimension leaving the door open for more stories tied to Katie and Kristi, there could be a literal rebirth of their various interactions with the demon dubbed Tobi. However, considering the lackluster reception the latter two installments had connected to that story, it's likely Wan, Blum and whichever filmmakers they partner with will ultimately start from scratch.

Paranormal Activity is a highly influential horror franchise that began with the 2007 film of the same name, created by Oren Peli. The series is renowned for its use of the found-footage style, focusing on various families haunted by a demonic entity named "Tobi."
