Less than a week after the theatrical release of Wicked: For Good, Glinda is officially getting her own spinoff. The beloved character is played by Ariana Grande-Butera in Wicked and Wicked: For Good. The second installment had a record-breaking box office debut, grossing $150 million domestically and $226 million worldwide.

Now, Harper Collins has announced that a novel titled Galinda: A Charmed Childhood by Gregory Maguire is being released on September 29, 2026. As the title indicates, the book will explore Galinda's childhood before she attended Shiz University, had her life forever changed after meeting Elphaba, and changed her name to Glinda.

The novel is also being described as a "sister volume" to the bestselling Elphie: A Wicked Childhood, a book about Elphaba's childhood by Maguire that was published on March 25, 2025. A limited number of deluxe Galinda editions are available now that preorders have opened, with these versions of the book including stenciled edges, designed endpapers, and other features. One of the ways Wicked: For Good changes the Broadway musical is that it features flashbacks to Glinda's childhood, which show that since she was young, she had a deep desire to do magic and has always wanted to impress others. Those flashbacks will now be greatly expanded on with an entire book dedicated to the story of Glinda's youth.

Gregory Maguire's history with Wicked predates the Broadway musical's debut in 2003. Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West was published in 1995 and became the inspiration for the musical, with there being many tonal and plot differences between the two versions of the story. This is important to keep in mind with Galinda, as it will exist in the continuity of Maguire's published stories and not of the Broadway musical or movies.

Maguire later continued the story he began by writing sequels in The Wicked Years series, including Son of a Witch in 2005, A Lion Among Men in 2008, and Out of Oz in 2011. This series largely focuses on Elphaba's son, Liir, and her granddaughter, Rain. A decade later, Rain's story was further extended in Maguire's Another Day series.

A new Wicked universe movie is reportedly in development, with discussions already taking place, but nothing is official yet. Given this, Galinda: A Charmed Childhood is the next confirmed story in this universe for fans after Wicked: For Good, even though it will take place in a different continuity than the musical and movies.
