Brunswick (Ga.) releases statement regarding potential revised resolution made with GHSA

Brunswick (Ga.) athletic director Steve Waters released a statement through the team’s Touchdown Club regarding a potential revised resolution with the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) for their role in the bench clearing brawl with Gainesville in a Class AAAAA playoff game.

The GHSA last week had announced that it would be suspending 41 Brunswick players, fining the school $5,000 and barring the Pirates from participating in the 2026 state playoffs. Per Waters’ statement, which is in its entirety down below, Brunswick is working with the GHSA towards a potential revised resolution, which points towards the Pirates possibly seeing lessened penalties.

“I have had multiple conversations with the Georgia High School Association this afternoon regarding a revised resolution to the incident that occurred at Glynn County Stadium between Gainesville High School and Brunswick High School. I anticipate continuing those discussions over the next 24–48 hours. As soon as all information is finalized, I will release an official statement through the Glynn County School System and to all local media outlets.

I also want to emphasize that the Glynn County School System and Brunswick High School will continue to follow the disciplinary guidelines outlined in the Glynn County Schools Code of Conduct. We are committed to holding all individuals involved accountable for their actions, regardless of the final outcome from the GHSA.”

Late in the third quarter of the playoff game, trailing 42-0, a fight broke out between Brunswick and Gainesville, with viral video showing Pirates’ players instigating Red Elephants’ players, igniting an all out melee between the two teams.

The GHSA announced yesterday that the Class AAAAA state quarterfinal between Gainesville–Langston Hughes will be played this upcoming Friday, Dec. 5. Per the release by the GHSA, the Red Elephants will have use of their entire roster and no players are suspended for the contest, which initially Gainesville was to have 35 players out due to suspension.

The association explained via the statement made on Monday that the delay with the legal appeal made would delay the Class AAAAA state semifinals and championship game, thus leading to the decision to proceed with the state quarterfinal contest taking place this Friday night.
