The ailing Vikings probably regret letting Sam Darnold walk out the door

The Seahawks are on their way back to Seattle for a Week 13 home game against the Minnesota Vikings, where Sam Darnold will take on his former team. We all know the phrase "the grass is always greener on the other side" is often used as a negative connotation, but when it comes to Minnesota's quarterback situation, the grass actually is greener in the Emerald City.

The Vikings decided to let Sam Darnold test free agency this past offseason, despite his Pro Bowl caliber season, and instead went with JJ McCarthy who they selected No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Minnesota is likely regretting that decision, as McCarthy is ranked dead last this season with a QBR of 24.8 - 33rd out of 33 quarterbacks. However, despite McCarthy's lackluster performance, the Vikings are likely going to be missing him as well on Sunday.

McCarthy suffered a concussion during Minnesota's 23-6 road loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, and remains in concussion protocol per ESPN's Kevin Seifert. If McCarthy is unable to clear protocol in time for the Week 13 game in Seattle, the Vikings will be forced to roll with rookie Max Brosmer.

Brosmer played at New Hampshire for five seasons, which included a medical redshirt year. In his final collegiate season, he transferred to Minnesota where he led the Golden Gophers to a 7-5 record with 2,617 yards passing, and threw for 17 touchdown passes against five interceptions. As Schefter noted in the tweet above, Brosmer went undrafted and eventually signed with the Vikings.

Believe it or not, but Brosmer actually has seen some action this season. During Minnesota's 48-10 rout of the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this year, Brosmer got into the game where he completed 2-of-4 passes for 29 yards, and became the first University of Minnesota quarterback to play for the Vikings since the 2002 season.

Of course, that being said, this Seahawks defense is going to provide a considerably stiffer challenge to Brosmer than the Bengals defense will - which is basically a JV unit at this point.

Whoever ends up starting at quarterback will surely be a favorable matchup for Seattle's defense. While I did mention at the beginning of this article how the Vikings would obviously prefer their starter to play, it's not like JJ McCarthy has been lighting the world on fire. McCarthy has won only two of his six starts this season, is barely completing over 50% of his passes, has only 929 yards through the air, and has thrown six touchdowns against ten interceptions. In the loss to Green Bay, he threw for only 87 yards and had two picks.

Mike Macdonald and his defense are already licking their chops.
